It’s been a little over a year since I first discovered author Burke, and since then I’ve been catching up on her cozy mysteries. The fact they are only over a hundred pages long is not what draws me to them, but I’m always amazed about how the author packs in a full-fledged story that makes me feel I’m in a movie theater and part of the chase. Not too much edge of your seat action, but I was trying to figure out the villain and holding my breath from time to time. Burke inserted humor in all the right places, thus I wasn’t super tense reading along as her characters went about their misadventures. Having read the first book in this series, I was familiar with the leads, whom I’m sure most readers quickly attach to. How can you not? Burke has thoughtfully drawn her two main characters, Kim and Brien, who are encircled in love – something everyone wants to be in or at least read about.
Well written with a steady pace, Gnarly New Year – Book 2 delves into a cozy mystery all the while allowing us (at least me) to hear “All You Need is Love” playing in the background as the author spins an adventurous, creative tale.
Book 2 takes readers back to Corsario Cove for a honeymoon with main characters, Kim an Brien, but things aren’t all happiness and champagne as the New Year lurks around the corner for these lovebirds. Along with the main characters, Gnarly New Year is peopled with those we came to know in book one, and a few newcomers. Such a fast paced, fun read, that will make you smile when you finish. And then ask, where’s book 3?
