“How did the owl communicate with you? Did it speak?”

“No, it was – telepathic. I just knew when it looked at me that it wanted me to follow.”

“You said it was the Peruvian pygmy owl.”

“Yes. It was about six inches tall and before it flew to the grave site it cried out,” she said feeling herself shiver.

“How did it sound?” Hans asked.

“A whistle-like cry, in short bursts.”

“That's its typical sound. So you followed it to the grave. Did it try to tell you anything when you got there?”

“No. It just sat on the stones looking at me,” Clare said.

“That is curious,” he said. He thinks for a moment then said, “Maybe you should get a team together and check El Brujo and the Temple of the Moon to see if something unusual comes up.”

“It's been two years since I've been in the field. I don't even know if I can get a team together,” Clare replied.

“I know Cord and Percy are looking for an expedition. Maybe they know a few others who'd be willing to go with you. Let me give them a call and then I'll get back to you,” he said, with a contemplative look in his eyes. “I'm going to look something up that's bothering me.”

“I don't think I can go back there,” Clare said and hung her head.
