This was an enjoyable story, although it did tackle some disturbing issues such as abuse and how women have to fight for their lives against controlling men.

I like stories about strong women and this book offers a few. Not all the men are troublesome, however, and it was good to have the mix of decency, too.

There was a good sense of place and the characters were believable. Not everything was resolved...we will have to wait for that.

Poppy hit a nerve with me from the beginning. I’ve been in situations where frustration was so intense all I wanted to do was scream at the top of my lungs while driving a car. In Poppy’s case, she was not alone and the car crashed through a store’s window.

The book is from the perspective of a young woman (no longer “jail bait” age) who discovers the man who raised her was not her biological father. She experiences anger and humility–anger that she was never told, and humility because of the circumstances of how she and her mother came to live with the man she calls “Poppy.” You experience her emotions, and discover the real truth behind the circumstances.

This is a great book for teens, one they can relate to today with so many families no longer what was considered traditional a generation or two ago. It deals with their super-charged emotions, and also reassurances that they can get through it with the support of the ones who love them.

I chose The White Cat for Christmas because I was, already, a huge fan of the author Cherime MacFarlane. I was hooked from the start. Whereas I have little interest in romance as a genre, this foursome love story, a woman, a dog, a man, and a cat, is charming and expertly written.

I curled up in a chair and completely visualised the entire story as I read. The author’s descriptions are excellent without being so obtrusive that they take over from the story telling. Not for an instant did I want to skip a sentence. I wish more books were written this way.

Then, there was the main reason I read Cherime MacFarlane’s books—they are set in Alaska; she allows me to see and feel it.

On the inside, this is a story of true love, of going without and scrimping and saving and making sacrifices and working hard all to please the woman he loves. “When Momma’s not happy, nobody’s happy.” I thoroughly enjoyed this story from beginning to end. I especially loved the internal voice of the hero and the way he talked to himself throughout. As ever, I am a big fan of this author and I hope to read more of her books in the future.

Interesting storyline - great read! THE CHEAT LIFE AND LOVE IN ALASKA CHERIME MACFARLANE

 

MacFarlane’s, The Cheat, is a fun read in a quirky kind of way. The two main characters, Francis and Monte are extremely lovable and true to real life. The characters are well-developed exhibiting all the insecurities and flaws that plague us as we search for true soulmate. There’s Francis, an ordinary paralegal, believing she’s fat and forty, and Monte, a popular guitar player with a local band, who thinks Francis is “fancy” fabulous. But there was no convincing Francis of that. She has no confidence in her ability to have and keep Monte; after all, she’d been down that road before and had lost her husband to the town tramp. So her self-confidence had taken a beating, all she was waiting for was for Monte to tell her it’s over. Things took a different turn than she’d expected and poor Francis was having great difficulty accepting the obvious. This was a quick, fun and interesting story. I read it in one sitting.

Cherime MacFarlane is an excellent author. I’m familiar with her realistic romances, but in Planet Crisis she demonstrates that she is equally adept at co-writing excellent science fiction stories too.

From the atmospheric cover, to the engaging storyline to the well-crafted prose Planet Crisis is a quality read. At novella length, this is a story that can be enjoyed in one sitting, and therefore is ideal for when you have an hour to spare or are looking to offer your mind an enjoyable, diverting break.

Highly recommended. I also suggest you check out the author’s extensive back catalogue, especially if you have an interest in romance or Alaska.

Serena and Ava have their own reasons for loving The Book Nook, the tiny workshop/café that provides a library in the form of a book exchange to customers, grateful for it in the small town a bus journey from Cork in Ireland. For Serena it’s her retreat from tragedy, the mysterious disappearance of the man whose child she miscarried and, one blustery autumn morning, a man she sees when she walks her dog on the beach, who apparently walks into the icy sea to his death. Her friend Ava visits often, escaping her city life with domineering husband, Richard, who insists on being the bread-winner and expects her to do nothing but wait on him, when her desire is to help those in need.

These two characters, and many others, are brilliantly drawn, and the story gripping, but there is much more to this book than appears at first. A girl whose father vanished from her life a year previously asks Serena to display a photograph of him. Serena does so, but tells Ava she will cast a spell to bring the girl luck with her quest. Is Serena really a white witch, or slightly insane with grief? If she does have magic powers, can she use them to find her own lost love? Can she help Ava to to find true happiness and if she does try, will it be as a normal friend or… read “Soup” and see, but do read it.

Though he’s still got his leg, there’s a lot of pain, too so a relative sends him to see the lovely herbalist who helps people with pain and nerve problems. One look at her and Brett wants more than pain relief.
Nikee has a secret room beneath her greenhouse full of pot plants. The woman began growing medical marijuana several years ago to help her father after a horrid accident, and she has no plans to quit. Hopefully telling Brett about the grow operation won’t cost her a relationship with the man.
If the delicate balance of her relationship with Brett isn’t enough, someone else has discovered her secret. He wants her crop and will do anything to cash in on her work, but Nikee can't go to the Troopers for help.

I had read some of Cherime MacFarlane’s short stories, such as A White Cat for Christmas, and didn’t pay attention when I grabbed this, having though it would be a short story. Instead of that I discovered a well-developed full-length novel. As I’ve been busy in took me a few weeks to read the book. I was able to instantly re-connect to the plot and characters and enjoy the sections I read, even though there were long breaks between reading chapters.

Other reviewers have mentioned the realism in Grass and Blue Skies; it is that realism, the originality, the knowing that you are being trusted to an interview of a life and place different to your own, but with humanitarian parallels that you can relate to that draws me back to Cherime’s work when I tire of the genre and trope formula writers. Fresh as an early Alaskan Spring morning. I’ll be back for more by this author.
