Since the finding of the body on Coop’s ship was not of Sarah’s concern, she would just go back to her station and busy herself with work.
She was in the middle of a project when the Capt. approached. “Sarah?”
She turned to look at the captain “yes, what’s up captain?”
He looked at her sternly “please, come with me.”
“Where are we going?”
“Sick day. The body is there.”
“I thought that was none of my concern.” Sarah stated
“it is now.”
Shit, this was not what Sarah needed to hear. Her life was complicated enough.
In a room at the infirmary that was used for isolation patience, the body was on the bed. The suit had been removed and the corpse was under a sheet.
Sarah turned to him “okay captain and to tell me what this has to do with me!” She demanded
the captain said nothing but motioned to Dr. Stevens to lift the sheet.
Sarah was looking straight at her ex Ensign Todd then she fainted.
Sarah came to on a gurney. She looked around “what the hell? How did I get here?”
The captain, who was sitting beside her bed stated “you passed out after seeing Todd.” He said matter-of-factly
“Oh right. My God what happened to him?” She wanted to know
“He was shot Sarah. Someone killed Todd and put him in that suit that jettisoned him into deep space.” The captain explained
“damn! The poor guy. Can you tell when this happened?”
“No, the intergalactic police will look into it. They are going to be asking you questions.” Her boss explained “why?”
“Quite simple Sarah. You were his girlfriend you also caught him cheating.”
“Yeah so?” Sarah was confused
“that could be motive to kill him.”
“But I didn’t. Sure, I yelled at him and I told him he was scum pagan and left then went to get really drunk in the bar. I swear that was the last time I saw him
“Were you with Coop?”
“Um yeah I was with Coop. Why?
“Think about this Sarah you were seen at the station yelling at your cheating scum boyfriend then went and had drinks with another man right after. The same man happened to be the person who found Todd’s body floating in space. How is that going to look?”
“Like we cooked it up over drinks and he did the deed?”
“That’s exactly how it’s going to look so I recommend that you be as honest as possible with the police. I can provide an alibi for you that is ironclad. You’ve been on this ship doing your job for the last eight weeks with small side trips to various space stations under supervision the whole time. You have to log on and off every time you leave the ship and enter a station and the reverse. Your time is well documented. I however cannot vouch for your drinking partner.”
Thanks, I think.” Sarah suddenly had a splitting headache
“one more question. Did you tell coop who Todd is?”
“Not that I know of but hey I wish it faced. This was a weeks ago right after that we shipped out and I never saw Todd or his bimbo again until this morning.”
“Well, coop and his partner Al are going to be questioned as well.” The captain explained
“about the find?”
“Yes that and where he’s been for the last two months.”
“Damn “poor Coop”
the captain looked at Sarah earnestly “can I ask you something?”
“Sure captain, what?” She answered
“is it possible that coop might be the baby daddy?”
Sarah was silent for a minute and then nodded and said “almost 99% sure.”
“Does he know?”
Sarah shook her head “no he doesn’t.”
“You really need to tell him Sarah. In light of what happened.” Her boss explained
“yeah, I guess I should.” Sarah sighed
“you should tell them tonight. Tomorrow we dock at the intergalactic police headquarters. You may not get a chance to talk again.”
“Okay, this is not at all what I planned.”
“What do you mean?”
Who was in one night or. A night of drunken last I was upset I just went for the first honk I saw in the bar and wanted revenge sex. I never expected to see him again. I hadn’t seen Todd in four months. We had been talking about starting a family and maybe getting married so I stopped taking my birth control. We were supposed to have a romantic reunion that night but it never happened.”
“Damn! The bastard!” The Captain uttered vehemently.
“No shit!” Sarah snorted
“so, seeing him on the ship was a shock to you today.” The captain continued
“indeed, we talk to the canteen earlier and hashed everything out.” Sarah explained
“except of course your delicate condition.” The captain was smiling
“right “Sarah smiled back sheepishly
“you owe it to him to be honest Sarah “
“you’re right. I do. Thanks Capt.
“for what?”
“For not judging me!”
“You’re human Sarah. Shit happens.” He answered
Sarah just nodded and got off the gurney managing to walk away.
