This was my first Emlyn Goode Mystery, but it won’t be my last! Author Susan Lynn Solomon has created a wonderful cozy mystery series, and this holiday novella is a delightful crash course into it.

When the police throw a Christmas bash, it is merry mayhem as everyone is surprised by the grisly secret Santa gift. Although her cop boyfriend tells her repeatedly to stay out of it, Emlyn Good tries to figure out the mystery. After all, where else will she get material for her next book. As the story progresses, readers get to know Emlyn, her family and cats well. While it is clear that the characters have, for the most part, been introduced and developed previously, Ms. Solomon presented her characters in a way that I felt I knew them.

I was looking for a new book for my great-nephew and happened upon this one. I love children’s books written in a singsong rhyming style reminiscent of Dr. Seuss and this book was just what I was looking for.

The cadence of the rhyme along with the skillful illustrations rapidly engages the youngster’s attention as they follow the characters on their search for the ‘golden ruler,’ A fun and enjoyable read, this book also imparts an important lesson for youngsters without being preachy.

My great-nephew thoroughly enjoyed it and, I hope, took away with him a valuable concept.

I can recommend this book without reservation to any who have young children in their lives

FILL SOMEONE'S STOCKING WITH THE JOY OF A GREAT BOOK THE LAST TIMEKEEPERS AND THE DARK SECRET SHARON LEDWITH

 

I will start by saying that I have read the first book in The Timekeepers series and I thought that this one was much better than the first. The writing got much better in this one. It was easier to follow who was who in this book. The author didn’t switch back and forth between characters first and last names as much in this book, actually rarely at all. It made it much easier to follow.The beginning of this book started out wonderfully. The writing immediately grabbed my attention. I started flying through the first half of the book. I was enjoying the story, the humorous ways the characters teased each other lovingly and the adventure was one that really piqued my interest. It had some funny moments.

Midway, or closer to the end the story just seemed to lose its sparkle for me. I found myself losing interest and becoming distracted. I think things started happening too quickly and too much at once. I just started to feel like it was being rushed. Towards the very end of the story events started to catch my attention again and keep my interest.

There was a cute little surprise in the story and it had some sweet moments. There was one particular event that happened close to the end that kind of confused me. One moment someone or something was gone, but then in the end of the story returned. I don’t know if I was missing something or what. It wasn’t really explained how this came to be.

I loved that a particular very important lady from History plays a part as a character in this story. I thought the short role she played was brilliant in this story and I think it was one of the parts of this book that I most enjoyed.

All in all, this book was not too bad. It was very imaginative and refreshing. It seems that the author gets better with each book. I would probably read the next book in this series because of this reason. Romance seems to be starting to develop a little bit for some of the characters so I would like to see where it goes.

Fans of Rick Riordan’s middle grade novels may enjoy reading this series.

The author really shows his mettle in this story. Mr. Nosach has taken on the topic of abuse, drinking and suicide. Adams best friend Curtis is being beaten by his drunken father and gets to the point where he finds only one solution. Adam feels the loss profoundly and Sebastian doesn’t know how to handle his nephews grief. The story is told with compassion and I gave it five stars for sensitive story telling

It’s very rare for me to find a book like this one and as you keep reading, there is a constant giggle that it just can’t stop. Stories like this are a reminder that no matter the age or the rough pass of time, love will still come to you, from one way or another, a mother, a relative or a close person to you will always care and get worried about you and as twisted as your life might be, there is a solution for that too.
I, honestly don’t have the words to express how much I love this book, especially because two months ago one of my beloved pet passed away and while reading this, I was remembering every moment of happiness I have with him, just because we have a language, can talk and complain it doesn’t mean dogs or animals in general don’t do that too, and considering the joy a pet brings to your life, it’s normal to suggest that this story happen to all of us in a daily basis.
No criticism, no suggestions, just buy and read this book, times are always difficult, no matter the perspective, but stories like this one can make everyone’s day a little bit better.

The story begins with Benita the first of several narrators who share their story as to why they are one of the faces behind the stone. As the reader is escorted around the cemetery, we listen to stories of alcohol, abuse, and suicide accompanied with a warning to readers about the consequences of apathy. It was the warning herald by Sam, "Hear my voice before you too wind up a face behind stone!" that sent chills down my spine. As I read on, I encounter more and more faces and was amazed at the author's ability to give life to these tragic figures. People, this is a ghost story like no other!

If I had to compare this book to anything already out there, I would have to compare it to the play, Our Town. However, unlike OT the story doesn't go in depth into the mundane parts of the characters. Faces Behind Stones gets straight to the point and starts where most stories end. From beyond the grave teens share their stories with the living, stories that went unspoken until now.

I wasn't expecting something like this from Fran Lewis her stories are usually uplifting and witty, this however, was much more dark and tragic. Using fiction, I was pleasantly surprised at how she was able to tackle the issues that plague today's youth. With a sympathetic ear, Fran listens to her characters and gives them a stage to tell their stories. Also in the end of the book, there is an appendix that helps educators and parents understand what's going on in the teen world. This is a must buy for those working with or living with teens.

This series has something for sci-fi and romance lovers alike. There is plenty of action yet this book is aimed at an 18+ audience. I highly recommend the books to fans who like a bit of everything in a story.
